The three most popular ways to transport a bike (or bikes) on a vehicle are on a trunk mounted bike rack, a hitch mounted bike rack or a rooftop bike rack. Read on further below for our article that highlights and outlines the benefits and considerations for each of these types of bike rack...

Three Types of Bike Racks:

When you are looking to purchase a bike rack for your vehicle, this can be an incredibly difficult process, and it is a very big decision that you are making. There are so many bike racks that are available on the market, that it can be a bit frustrating to figure out which ones are the best, and what you should be looking for when it comes to buying one. There are several different aspects that you will need to consider before you make your decision on which bike rack that you will be needing. These different aspects include the type of bikes that you are needing to transport, how many bikes, what type of vehicle you are going to be using this bike rack on, and how often you are planning to use it, are all factors in which you should take into consideration before making a purchase.

There are three different types of racks that you will have to choose from, they are trunk, hitch, and roof racks, and depending on the type of vehicle you own will depend on which one is the best fit for your vehicle. It is important that before you decide on which one is best for you, and that you know exactly what it is that you are looking for, and this will help you to narrow down your search.

Roof Top Bike Racks

Roof Bike RackIf you own a vehicle that has an incredibly high roof, it is probably not very helpful for you to purchase a roof top rack, since you will be having to lift your bike very high to get it up there. This may not be an issue for you if you are a taller individual, and your bike doesn't weight much, but there may be some that are with you that will be using this rack as well, and so it is important to consider who will be using it besides you. One of these racks are only able to carry two bikes, so if you are needing to carry more, then it would be a smart idea to purchase another one.

The roof models are a very good idea if you have a vehicle that is lower to the ground. They come with crossbars that make it easy for you to carry equipment, and other type of gear such as skis, cargo boxes, and surfboards as well, wherever it is that you may be traveling. Even though these models are incredibly easy to install, you will not want to have to take the rack on and off of your vehicle on a day to day basis. Whenever you decide on a roof rack for your vehicle, you must be aware of the fact that it will add a significant amount of weight to it. This can then make parking garages, eating at a drive through, and your own garage off limits to you until you have removed the bikes and the rack from your vehicle. These types of racks are very good for allowing you to carry other types of accessories on them during your travels.

There are some advantages and disadvantages when it comes to using a roof top bike rack and these include:

Roof Top Bike Rack Advantages

- Versatile system - Very secure and stable - Unimpeded access to the vehicles doors

Roof Top Bike Rack Disadvantages

- Having to hoist and reach - Takes the wind head on - May not fit in lower clearance spaces or garages

Hitch Mount Bike Racks

Hitch Mount Bike RackIf a roof model bike rack is not an option for you and your vehicle, then you might want to consider a hitch mount bike rack. This specific type of bike rack secures the bikes either by simply clamping the front wheels, and the rack is able to support the weight of the bikes on a tray or by supporting the cross member of the bike with a clamp. These types of hitches are very easy to load and unload, they can expand so that they are able to hold up to four and possibly more bikes, and they are able to carry any type of bike as well. Most of these hitch mounts are able to hold up to 60 pounds on them, which is helpful for you to be able to bring all the bikes that you want. Even though these specific styles have a low loading height, it is able to use the frame of it as the primary point of attachment.Hitch mounts, because of where they are placed, are able to keep your bike, or bikes, out of the wind and this means that there won't be a lot of bugs splattered all over them. However, since they are attached onto the back of the vehicle, they could limit some access to the rear entrance of the vehicle. With the extended attachment on the back, it can make it difficult to park in certain places, and they can be very expensive. They are, however, considered to be the most ergonomically sound option when it comes to loading. There are some advantages and disadvantages that will need to be considered before a decision is made about which bike rack is the best for you to choose.

 Hitch Mount Bike Rack Advantages

- Simple installation - Some models do allow access to the rear door - Great for frequent use - Easy to load and unload the bikes

Hitch Mount Bike Rack Disadvantages

- Many of the advanced models are incredibly expensive - Bikes have been known to sway a bit - All of the basic models can limit access to the rear and the trunk

Trunk Mounted Bike Racks

Trunk Mount Bike RackIf your vehicle is not equipped with a hitch receiver, and you are not interested in having to deal with a roof top rack, then a trunk mounted bike rack is the only other option that is available for you to choose from. These specific types of racks usually don't need a lot of added accessories, and they don't require a lot of work to install them. When you are trying to find the least expensive and the quickest way to accessorize your bike transport, then one of these mounts are the perfect mount for you to choose from. These types of mounts are very lightweight, and they can be removed very easily from many different types of vehicles.

This type of rack will also prevent you from easily opening up your trunk while it is still attached to your vehicle, so you will have to remove it as well when you are needing to access the trunk. These types of bike racks are not able to carry a lot of bikes, therefore, if you are needing to carry more than a couple of bikes, then a trunk mounted bike rack might not be the answer for you.

There are some advantages and disadvantages that come along with this specific type of bike rack as well.

Trunk Mount Bike Rack Advantages

- Less expensive - Easy to load and portable - Perfect for occasional use - Can be used on multiple vehicles

Trunk Mount Bike Rack Disadvantages

- Bikes may sway - Limited access to the trunk
